In the first episode of Cyberflix's Titanic: Adventure Out of Time, Wesley gets yelled at by his landlady, longs for real eggs, and is thrown back in time to an ill-fated mission as a spy on the Titanic in 1912 after being bombed in his WWII era London flat.
This point and click adventure game was a best seller. It was the most historically accurate representation of the Titanic in 3D medium until James Cameron released the 1997 Titanic film, which popularized this game even further.
Join me as we explore the period leading up to the Great War onboard the RMS Titanic as an agent of His Majesty's Secret Service, and foil the dastardly plot!
Titanic was developed by Cyberflix and published by GTE Entertainment in the United States. Similar to Myst, Titanic is a prerendered point-and-click, created on CyberFlix's proprietary DreamFactory engine. Cyberflix spent two years researching the Titanic to ensure it was as historically accurate as possible. They even brought in a Hollywood screenwriter to do research, who used the Library of Congress's online photo department to help the development team faithfully recreate the ship and the time period in which the game is set.
Unlike Myst, this game has characters you interact with regularly. They are animated with a series of still frames, stitched together in sort of a SouthPark-like animation using HeadShop, an animation package. The characters will remember actions and it will affect the progression of the gameplay. The game also features an interesting mix of classical scoring and more modern soundtrack, with several original tracks, giving it a good atmosphere.
Commercially, this game did very well, in part because the Titanic film came out in December 1997, heavily driving sales of the game. In fact, Cyberflix provided a $5 rebate if you provided a stub from a Titanic film ticket. It eventually sold more than 1.5 million copies by October 2000.
This game is another fond childhood memory of mine. I never played it myself, and this will be a blind playthrough, but my neighbor had it and he spent many hours wandering around the ship. He was a Titanic aficionado, and had all kinds of memorabilia and books, and I've done some reading on the Titanic myself, so we'll see how much of his knowledge I absorbed while we play the game.
Similar to Myst, I'm going to keep a notebook of important things. This will be much less used than the Myst notebook, but I find for puzzle games, my memory can use a little help.
